Goodbye
Doofus Dog
- .05.00 - 22.02.09

The ad read -

Neopolican Rock Weeler BullMastik
cross puppies for sale.

(huh!?)
.....of course I had to go and see what on earth they
looked like. There was a huge litter of half starved,
flea ridden puppies in a filthy, frozen yard. When
half a dog roll was thrown into the yard the mother
attacked them to get to it first. Pete told me we
were definately not taking all of them - I had to
choose one!

Apart from being malnourished, underweight, full
of worms and covered in fleas the vet seemed to
think he would be fine - the date - 13.06.00.

He was named Dino Ferrari. An impressive name
for a huge impressive Mastiff. Instead he grew into
a Dino Flintstone - a bit thick and a big doofus!

He hated being away from his brothers and sisters
and let us know all about it by screaming all night &
for a six week old puppy he could throw temper
tantrams that were totally out of control. Eden got
the job of 'nanny' much to her disgust.

Loved his 'bad-ear' phase when the ears were up
one day and hanging down the next. They just
couldn't figure out what they wanted to do. By this
age Dino could sit, down, stay, and wait for his
food. The magic word was 'Schmackos' & he just
oozed intelligence and obedience when he heard
it mentioned. Once he'd had his 'Schmacko' all
intelligence and obedience disappeared until the
next time the word was mentioned!

Puppy pre-school was a huge drama. Poor Doofus
was the largest, worst behaved student there.
I was certain we were going to get expelled but to
my surprise not only did we managed to finish the
course but he was awarded 'Most Improved Student'
on graduation night. That certificate meant more to
me then than any Championship Award my dogs
had gained in the show ring in years past! We had
both worked really hard for it - thank goodness
for 'Schmackos'!

He adored Pete, the river, the car, swims, balls,
digging up rocks and ripping up his bed. (Grrrrr!)

He loved Jaben and went totally loopey when ever
he came to visit. The time Jaben left without playing
'Chase me Screaming Around the House' poor Dino
cried and howled for an hour!

He finally forgave me for being the reason he got
neutered, but not quite enough to stop ripping up
his blasted bed! Sheesh he drove me nutz!!!

Suddenly we realised he was an 'old boy'. His muzzle
was grey but his 'attitude' was a 6 month old's.
He never really slowed down and he never really
'grew up'.

Sneaking into the kitchen and stealing bikkies out of
the pantry, 'yodelling' at the top of his voice when
the cars came home at night, running through the
yard and skidding shingle everywhere, tripping me
up everytime I turned around and sitting waiting for
me outside the bird room door - living with Dino
things that are now memories.

Some how he hurt himself, his sore back finally
turning into complete paralysis. We said goodbye
to our 'old puppy', let him go to sleep one last
time, and buried him today with his favourite ball.
